After !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I went and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . It was an ugly peeling red respray, so I took it to be professionally plastidipped on Monday. I got word that it would be ready for pickup today, and here we are. I decided to use a glossified “Vintage Gold” to complement the car’s Emerald Mica (green with gold metallic flake) paintjob.
I’ve been very happy with John’s one-man operation at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! here in Aurora, CO. Friendly, knowledgable, fair prices, and from what I can tell so far, excellent workmanship.
As a reminder, the hail that started all of this is actually allowing me to turn this Miata into an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in the course of the next year and a half or so. Thus I’m parting out the car, including the hardtop. You can grab more info on that !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

-whispers- Would this be an appropriate situation to get some gold Miata badges that would normally be reserved for old Lexuses.

No matching gold wheels?

good color. keeping the latches wheels and gas cap silver/chrome?

How much did that run you?

Haha!! I actually find that I’m quite nostalgic of that gold badging trend of the 90s these days.
But I think I’ll pass. ;)

Thanks!
Gas cap & latches definitely not changing. If I weren’t parting the car out, I would seriously consider doing the wheels.

With some not insignificant prep work and the Vintage Gold it was $150. I decided to add a glossifier on top, which added another $50. John even cleaned the window for me!

“Professional Plastidip” sounds a bit funny. Almost like “clean hooker”.

I know what you mean, but he’s been able to make a living for himself and his family for the past three years doing nothing but plastidip. He said he got burnt out on doing paint work for 20+ years and decided to branch out into plastidip for himself.

I have to say it looks.... good good good. Also waiting for that steering wheel haha

Looks good. Probably looks like a tan soft top from a distance.

Thanks!
I’m about to throw a towel in the car to cover the steering wheel when parked. Taking care of it for you!

With a strangely large rear window! I’m pretty happy with it. I think it’s something sorta unique. I haven’t seen this combo done before, at least.

You’re too kind haha

I’ve given first dibs to Sam Stoner , but you can have second dibs if he passes on it.
I drove the car around tonight and I’m absolutely in love with how it looks with the Emerald Mica. It’d be cool to keep seeing the color combo in my Instagram feed!

I think I'll get my future scooter dipped.

I’m not saying it’s not lucrative, but plastidip is literally the easiest thing to paint with in my opinion. I feel like people hear the word ‘paint’ and instantly think it needs to be done by a professional. Same with vinyl or wraps. Its just a guy with a heat/hvap gun. Nothing against you, just small ranting. The amount these places charge sometimes are hilarious in comparison to the cost of plastidip itself.

Unfortunate for such a pretty car to be parted. I would have figured a weather-beaten, dented, top-torn, ratty donor in appliance white or something for an Exocet build... but it is your car.
If it were me, I couldn’t do that to my Classic Red PEP 99 Miata... even with it showing 100K+ miles... I would sell, buy a rough donor, instead, and use the difference in price between the nice Miata sold, and the ratty Miata bought, to pay for the engine and driveline to be thoroughly refreshed, the suspension parts cleaned and coated, new coil-overs, and general preparations to be ready for Exocet duty.
If I lived closer, and had some spare cash, I’d trade you my 99 PEP for that beautiful green LS with it’s hard top.
That hard top just needs a light gold (or green) metallic Lexus-style reflective solar tint on the rear window. (I would leave the side windows, and the convertible top window alone, probably.)
Some gold 6UL wheels, too... but again, said part-out.

That’s just the thing: my Miata is a weather-beaten, dented, top-torn donor. It’s got pretty green paint, but that’s about all it has going for it when it comes to outward appearances (and that paint isn’t in the best shape in certain parts). The engine and driveline will be thoroughly refreshed for the Exocet. The new Ohlins coilovers already installed on the car will just need to be revalved and respringed for the lighter weight.
And I will be selling my black 6ULs to get some gold ones. ;)

Alrighty-then.
Sounds like it will be a great exocet build. Have you decided on colors and such for it?
Those Ohlins Coil-overs should be fantastic if the damping can be adjusted down, and the springs get replaced for ligher-rate ones... cutting half the weight out of the car may affect the damping and spring rate requirements, but at least a coil-over is usually made for that sort of adjustment.

Carbon fiber bodywork. Going to try to replicate the Emerald Mica paint in a metallic powdercoat for the chassis. Gold/bronze wheels.
Like I said, I’ll be revalving and respringing the coilovers for less weight. They are damping-adjustable, so it should be just about perfect. I’m excited.

I’ll admit, I am still trying to catchup reading your posts.
When I asked about colors, I sort of envisioned matte gold on the chassis and wheels, with Emerald, or even slightly brighter Lotus Racing Green on the bodywork.
But I think your plan sounds quite good, with an emerald green frame, and gold wheels. Are you planning on coating the suspension arms and other exposed Miata bits, as well? I am looking forward to reading and seeing more about the process.
I have briefly looked in to Exocet before, but I hadn’t seen FlyinMiata’s other available variant... the Bauer Catfish... That would look amazing in Lotus Racing Green, basically as rich a green hue, as that pictured blue... not that blue looks bad whatsoever, either, nor would Ecurie Ecosse blue, like a D-type successor for the 21st century.
